Minority Party (Papua New Guinea)
[edit]A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Minority Party (Papua New Guinea), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. Dbromage [Talk] 07:16, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'd been meaning to do that. It may have been a misunderstanding - anyway, it's pretty plainly in need of deletion. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 11:06, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
Central Provincial
[edit]Have you been able to find anything confirming that last result yet? Is it being challenged in court? Rebecca 09:15, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- I haven't been able to find any online or print reference for it yet. Hoping that one of the newspapers will do a list of all 109 MPs, or that the Electoral Commission will issue some final results. Central Provincial was declared on 31 July and I've heard verbally that it was won by Alphonse Moroi, as expected. There is a court challenge, as with many seats (and it's most irritating that this story didn't mention the winner), but that doesn't affect the declaration until the court finds otherwise. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 09:25, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- Heh, and the post-courier just wants to run "elections were a peaceful, non confrontational rosy happy endeavor" stories aliasd·U·T 13:32, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- As far as I can see, the Post-Courier declared that it had been won (and that that had been declared) by Moroi on July 30, and then declared that he was still just leading on July 31. Very odd. Rebecca 08:46, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Missing seat and by-election
[edit]Which seat is still missing? And when will the by-election be held? Thanks! —Nightstallion 17:41, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- The seat for which we don't have a published result is Central Provincial (the winner was Alphonse Moroi, but we have no written source for that, yet, unfortunately). It was declared somewhere between 29 July and 31 July. Hoping that the PNG Electoral Commission will produce a list of the final results or something. Neither major newspaper, nor the Electoral Commission, nor any media anywhere else that I know of, have published a list of all 109 winners - quite disappointing.
The seat of Rai Coast, in Madang, will have a by-election in September, the Electoral Commission says. There have been some calls for the second-placed candidate to be given the seat, to avoid the by-election process, but it seems that a by-election will go ahead. There's been considerable criticism of the appeals court's slowness - if they'd finalised their decision a few weeks earlier, Yali would not have been allowed to run, and this mess would have been avoided. As it is, there are 108 members actually in Parliament at present. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 00:59, 22 August 2007 (UTC)- Aha! Just after writing that, I decided to try another search, and found a reference for Alphonse Moroi being the Central Province governor (i.e. winner of the Central Provincial seat). At last, we have all the results! Wantok (toktok) 01:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Great, thanks! So, there'll be a September by-election? Might want to mention that in the article, no? —Nightstallion 09:01, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Still no announcement of the by-election date? —Nightstallion 15:14, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- Not yet (that I've seen). Various stories about candidates jockeying for position, but no Electoral Commission yet. Wantok (toktok) 13:42, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
- nods BTW, I've just added a new column to add the party standings *after* the membership changes. —Nightstallion 09:02, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Another story on the by-election - "indications were that the bi-election would be held either in October or November". Wantok (toktok) 00:42, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks! BTW, where those all the membership changes there were? That's rather few, isn't it? —Nightstallion 06:32, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- There's quite a few more membership changes than that, mostly in the form of independents joining parties, but those three are the only ones we've gotten around to confirming yet. If no one else does, I'll add them when I go through and write articles on people (though I'm a bit stuck at the moment because I'm trying to research the extent of Belden Namah's involvement in the Sandline affair). Rebecca 06:37, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. Good luck with both endeavours, then! —Nightstallion 16:37, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Help
[edit]Since you seem to know a lot about Oceanian politics, I thought I'd ask you: Have you seen any results for the Nauruan constitutional referendum, 2007 around? I know it's been held (in contrast to the referendum in Sierra Leone, where I searched for results only to found out it had been cancelled...), but I have not been able to find *any* mention at all about its result... As the Nauruan presidential election, 2007 was done in parliament and not by the people, I suppose it might have been rejected, but it might just as well have passed and simply not gone into effect until the next time... Help? —Nightstallion 13:09, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- I have no personal contacts in Nauru, and hadn't noticed any results, sorry - but are you sure the referendum's been held yet? A couple of stories seem to indicate the constitutional changes were still being discussed by a convention in May/June, and one said the referendum might be in October. Do you have better sources? Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 14:08, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, but that was when the election was also expected to be held in October... This is one of the only sources I can find on the issue. —Nightstallion 14:50, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Coverage of Nauru seems even worse than that of PNG. I'll keep an eye out. Wantok (toktok) 03:01, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot, hope you have more luck than I do... You don't happen to know anybody who knows someone in Nauru? ;) —Nightstallion 14:57, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- Apparently, the referendum will be held in October after all. —Nightstallion 10:51, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, that's good - well, at least it means we might yet have a chance of finding the results! Wantok (toktok) 12:08, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed, though it's almost embarrassing how little information about this there is... —Nightstallion 20:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Another thing I could use help with is information about the results of the Kiribatian parliamentary election, 2007... —Nightstallion 10:24, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- FYI, while there's a list of members on the parliament's homepage, they don't list party allegiances and state that those often change multiple times in a single session. I've written then an e-mail asking for some info, anyway. —Nightstallion 20:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Still no reply. sighs —Nightstallion 16:38, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
BTW, have you heard about the early next French Polynesian legislative election yet? —Nightstallion 20:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, very late this year or early next year French Polynesia will hold parliamentary, municipal and presidential elections. Actually, new interim president want to hold parliamentary elections after local municipal elections of early 2008, but France is putting pressure to French Polynesia to hold new parliamentary elections as soon as possible (December this year ,so before local elections) to stabilize the territory. Parliamentary elections should be followed by a new presidential election. (Maximiliano Herrera of Electoral Calendar)
Hi Wantok, I've been trying to write articles for some of the newly elected MPs, but I seem to have run into a bit of trouble with Boka Kondra, the new MP for North Fly in Western Province. I've so far found three conflicting sources - one that says he joined NA, one that says he joined the PNC, and one that says he was with the opposition. I've also seen different spellings of his name in just about every article that I've read. I don't suppose you've come across any sources which might shed a bit of light on this by any chance? Re: Template:User tpi-0
[edit]Hi Wantok. I am registered on the Tok Pisin wikipedia, and I noticed that you have altered the wording on the tpi-0 template. While I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the translation is 100% correct, I must question why this one was changed, since I copied the whole original template off tpi.wikipedia over to here... The wording used on theirs was "Dispela yusa i no save Tok Pisin" - I know the long should have been in there, but could not figure out where the heck to place it, since I am only tpi-1 and have a hell of a lot to learn! I hope that you don't take this as me being rude or anything, I was just wondering whether the actual tpi-0 template on the Tok Pisin wiki should be changed also, or whether it already has been? Thanks. Thor Malmjursson 09:50, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, thanks for letting me know! I'll fix the tpiwiki one too. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 09:54, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
hehe I think a bad translation is quite appropriate :) aliasd·U·T 11:58, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Not a bad translation considering English is my second language, Icelandic is my first, and I have been learning Tok Pisin from a load of old programmes that ABC Radio Australia's Shortwave service sent out. I don't know whether they still do, but there you go. Incidentally, Wantok; Do you need any administrators to work on tpi? I have applied here and been rejected for too few edits (Just short of 2000 now) and I would be happy to help out, even only as a temporary admin. If you have anything you need help with, point me at it and I will do what I can!.. Thor Malmjursson 15:14, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Pretty good then! At the moment tpiwiki has 2 active admins, which is more than enough for now. Although, we do need as much help as possible with creating content, and we have a template for novice translators to tag their articles for review by a native speaker of tok pisin. aliasd·U·T 00:38, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, TAM, you did well - the use of long and bilong can be quite confusing. Radio Australia does still broadcast a Tok Pisin service (despite its funding being cut back drastically by the benighted Australian government), and audio and transcripts are on the web. Minor correction - we don't have any actual native speakers (neither are there any, it seems, on enwiki; there aren't that many people with TP as a first language, even in PNG, where Tok Pisin is typically a 2nd or 3rd or 4th language) - the template aliasd is referring to is for review by fluent speakers. And as he says, we're greatly in need of content contributors. Wantok (toktok) 01:21, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Republicanism
[edit]Just a short question -- is there any support for turning PNG into a republic? —Nightstallion 10:23, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
- It's basically never mentioned as an issue these days. It has been raised a few times in the past but never really got anywhere. I very much doubt it will happen any time soon - it's just not an issue with significant political weight. However, if a government decided to push for it, it would probably happen - my impression is that there would be little active resistance (unlike in Australia, where a significant minority of the population is decidedly pro-monarchy). Wantok (toktok) 05:41, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Moreover, because it was assumed by the Constitutional Planning Committee that PNG would indeed sever the link with the monarchy, all references to the head of state are to the "Head of State" rather than to the Crown or the Queen. The Queen is not on the banknotes or coins; criminal actions are brought in the name of the State, not Regina. There is very little general awareness of the formal (and largely notional) role of the monarchy in PNG and the governor general does indeed act as a de facto non-executive president.Masalai 11:15, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Well, in Australia, it's more or less a decided matter that it will become a republic; support is around 60% or above for a directly elected president, and Kevin Rudd -- who'll almost certainly will the next election -- is a republican. Even if Rudd should fail to win, Howard will hand over to Costello during his term -- who is also a republican...
- So, PNG is mostly only de iure a monarchy? Why has noone thought of changing that, yet, then? —Nightstallion 14:55, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Excellent points, Masalai, thanks. There's no significant barrier to moving to a republic, as far as I know; and indeed the main political reason for adopting a constitutional-monarchy model at independence (the retention of imperial honours) is now defunct, as PNG has moved to a local honours system. However, as Masalai points out, it has no profile whatsoever as an issue, and there's no compelling political reason for a government to invest time and energy in it. Wantok (toktok) 03:49, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Mh. Do you think it would serve as a catalyst if other countries, especially in the same region, become republics (Australia and Solomon Islands are likely in the next few years)? —Nightstallion 07:54, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- In the present political climate in PNG, Australia becoming a republic would probably make it even less likely that PNG would; however, the current government is much better inclined toward the Solomons. That could have an effect. Overall, though, I think it's highly unlikely for the foreseeable future. Wantok (toktok) 23:36, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- Aw, too bad. Thanks for the info! —Nightstallion 00:22, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Nauru referendum
[edit]Hi Wantok I found this link regarding fresh news about Nauru referendum. Can you understand this language ? http://www.abc.net.au/ra/tokpisin/news/s2076573.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.24.74.42 (talk) 06:03, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, that's Tok Pisin (in Radio Australia's somewhat unusual written form). The translation is:
- It appears that the people of Nauru, a Pacific island country, will vote in a referendum early next year for a change in their constitution.
- This constitutional change, debated for more than 18 months, is intended to bring a halt to the financial mismanagement and corruption that have brought the country to bankruptcy.
- It was originally intended that the referendum would take place before Christmas, but due to elections being held, the referendum has been rescheduled for early in the new year.
- The chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee, Mathew Batsuia (BAT-SUE-AHH), a member of Parliament, has confirmed that the government intends to reform the constitution, and the people of Nauru will have the opportunity to vote in a referendum on these major changes:
- "The crucial parts relate to finance, they relate to the parliament legislature, they relate to the judiciary. And they also relate to the executive. Those are the more crucial parts of any country, and democracy. They have to be changed by the Nauruan people through referendum. The bill of rights too will have to be passed by referendum, so they will have to go before the people."
- Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 07:06, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, Wantok. Translation of a short story
[edit]Hi! So, you are a wikipedian from Papua Niugini and you speak Tok Pisin and Nalik. I hope, you could help me. I'm a Hungarian wikipedian, my name is Norbert Kiss. I wrote a really short story and now I have 121 translations about it. Could you make me a Tok Pisin and a Nalik version? The English version is here:
Myself
[edit]Ancient are my people to whom I belong, we are ancient ones, on this whole world. I speak an ancient language, the language of my own. I live in an ancient land, I’ve never lived elsewhere, and I belong here. This is me, myself. I am alone in the big world. I am alone, my nation passed away a long time ago, only I stayed. I speak my ancient language alone.
I am wandering on the road called life, I eat my bread and I drink my water alone. It is me who writes my books and I am the one who reads them. I climb the mountains behind my house; me I get the fish from the river which is in front of my house. Every day I go up to the hills to think and to meditate alone, only me on my own. While I was away, I have seen other people; some of them came to my land. I was good to them. I gave them food and drink, they could rest in my houses.
And now... strangers tell me, when they come here, what I should do, what I’m allowed to do. But here I am the landlord, I am the owner, I am the one who is at home. This is my ancient home, where my fathers and their fathers lived. This is my home, my land; I live here on my own.
I hope, you could help me. - Eino81 (talk) 19:30, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Gude Wantok!!!
[edit]Wow! I didn't realise you were still around... I've been looking for you for ages, Wantok. You would know me as a user called Iceflow, which was my old nick here. I'm now working on translatewiki.net, trying my best with what Tok Pisin I have, to translate the interface. I don't know whether you've been having net access issues, or what, but I am so pleased to see you back. Would you please get in touch with me, since I could really use your help! I'm admin on tpi.wikipedia at the moment, and It'd be good to get assistance from someone with better Tok Pisin than me! :) BarkingFish Talk to me | My contributions 19:33, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Unreferenced BLPs
[edit]Hello Wantok! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot notifying you on behalf of the the unreferenced biographies team that 1 of the articles that you created is currently tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 389 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Translation Update
[edit]I want to thank you for your help translating throughout this year's fundraiser. The fundraiser has greatly benefited from all your contributions. Currently, the Kartika, Liliaroja, Abbas and Joan Gomà appeals need to be translated, as we are running appeals from editors. You can find all translation requests at the translation hub on meta and you can follow the progress of the fundraiser in real time by tracking the fundraiser statistics. It is important to check the Core Messages as many languages still need updating. Also if you haven't already, you can subscribe to the translators-l mailing list for all new requests and major changes. Many thanks for your help in truly making this a global fundraiser that you can edit.Klyman (talk) 18:51, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Hello Wantok, Blo Mi
[edit]Hello Wantok, My name is Mikos. I am a fellow Nilpis as well, in fact, I too am from the Nalik area as well. Im from Lugagun village, not far from Madina, so id say we'd be Neighbors. Although i am very proud to call myself 'Mangi Nalik' , i have never had a chance to learn our local Nalik language. I grew up in Kavieng town so im only fluent in Tok Pisin as there was nobody to teach me Nalik. I would REALLY appreciate if there were someone to teach me the language and give me back a part of my Nalik heritage. It would be GREATLY appreciated as i have no other sources to go to. please contact me on my email: ringo_pipe@hotmail.com thank you very much Wantok

Re: (tag article for unreliable sources and non-neutrality) on Francis Ona and Noah Musingku
[edit]I am new here, so I would appreciate your advice. At the same time, I think that your tags are unfair. In the Francis Ona article I left all of the derogatory information posted, which was ALL unreferenced, and I added specific point by point alternate viewpoints, to obtain a balanced overall article.
In the Noah Musingku article, which I created from scratch, I tried to give a balanced presentation of both sides of the issues. I took anti-Musingku articles and his own documents. I know that my article is not consistent with the prevailing view of Musingku on PNG, but I think that it is more fair and more balanced because of that.
Please point out sections where I was unbalanced in my presentation, so I can fix it. Please point out where my 28 or more references, which I provided by document and page, are insufficient.
Dan Ecklund MD Camdoc2001 (talk) 14:48, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
- The first step to improving these articles is to follow the links in the tags and read the policies: WP:RELIABLE and WP:NPOV would be a good start. As you say, the stance taken in these articles is quite removed from the mainstream view; but these articles as they stand strongly reflect what I assume is your personal position. Articles that are primarily promoting an outlier viewpoint with an occasional grudging mention of the broader community view are not "balanced". Wikipedia is not the place to push a barrow. Papua
[edit]Thanks for voicing your thought on West Papua.
For your consideration I would like to mention, 1) as far as I know historically the English adopted the name "Papua" for the island whereas the Germans called it "New Guinea" leading to their quarter claim for German New Guinea, 2) Wikipedia already settled this question in May last year when Merbabu and others already voiced their opinions. The name "West Papua" was chosen on 18 Oct 1961, it was not an act of secession from Indonesia, it has been a consistent name used for the region used for nearly fifty years, it has been used by the media and academics who are the main English speakers who talk about the region.
And 4) in looking for the Wiki definition of 'Papua' I was surprised to discover no mention of it's original use/function as the name of the island. But sadly, looking at the Wiki history explained the new omission. As I mentioned, Wik was leading the Edit War in 2004. I see that you edited the Papua page on 18/May/'06; and whoever Merbabu is he was content with the Papua definition in March/'07 but recently, as if in preparation for something, he silently changed the definition in Sept/'10. Wik was banned indefinitely and any sock puppet will also be banned, but as it's impossible to be certain of true identities it's difficult to enforce such a ruling. But whoever the editors are, I suspect there is a general political agenda at play; I call your attention to 'funny joke' on about the 'Papuan cannibal' on the Project Indonesia page..
Merbabu described his recent edit as "(confusing setout and explanations - now clearer hopefully)", but what he did was remove the fact that Papua is an English name for the Island.
I wish I had more time to help, but I have more pressing issues than Wikipedia, I only found out about Merbabu's newest attempt to rename the article because Arjuna made the effort of emailing me via the Wiki-system. A little request
[edit]Gude Wantok. I'm from Wiktionary, where I just added a Tok Pisin entry for "wantok". I'm a beginner in Tok Pisin and I've never been to PNG, so I think it needs a little work. I'd be honored if you could fix the definitions.

Tok Pisin resources
[edit]Hi Wantok,
I am local to you (in Queanbeyan) and I'm studying Tok Pisin because I want to take the ANU's course in Neomelanesian (Tok Pisin, Bislama, and Solomon Islands Creole) next year. It's truly an amazing and fascinating language. What I can't find is any good resources for hearing or even reading the language, beyond the Radio Australia Tok Pisin service (which I am listening to regularly) and the Wantok newspaper. Nobody seems to talk in it on the Internet much, which I guess makes sense given the state of Interent infrastructure in PNG. There don't seem to be any books available in it, beyond the Bible.
I think I will have to go find and entice a fluent speaker to help me learn from them. This is an extreme length for me because I'm actually fairly shy, but perhaps you would like to meet or know how I could find more people locally who speak Tok Pisin?
I have also collected a fair few citations and quotes which I could add to the wiktionary project. With a language with so few learning resources, it's almost detective work to figure out the language, hence I'm doing a lot of work collecting texts and quotes. It's presumptuous since I am only learning, but I hope I will be able to help.

- Hi, you're quite right - there's a dearth of written Tok Pisin in general, certainly compared to its widespread use in PNG. For contemporary Tok Pisin online use, you'll probably find that PNG-related Facebook groups (loath as I am to promote Facebook in any way) and a few other PNG forums are about the most active areas of online discussion. Otherwise, I believe there are some good resources in some of the ANU libraries. There are a couple of movies in Tok Pisin that you might be able to get hold of: Cowboy and Maria and Tinpis Run come to mind. There is an online group called the Mihalic Project which is not very active but which is working on a revision of the classic Mihalic dictionary. Feel free to contact me directly at wantok (at) gmail.com - I know some of the lecturers for the ANU course and people in the PNG community here. Wantok (toktok) 09:42, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
- I'm a beginner as well, but I'd love to have conversational practice if you (anon) are interested! You can use the 'Email this user' link if you log in, or just use my talkpage. By the way, I have written most of Wiktionary's Tok Pisin entries, so if you want to help with that, I can point you in the right direction there as well. Thanks! (and sorry Wantok for butting in!). --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 23:18, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Tok Pisin Wikipedia
[edit]Hi Wantok. I'm not sure if its correct for me to leave a message about tpi-wiki here, but I read a message somewhere that you prefer to be contacted here. Anyway, I've been editing tpi-wiki, added some articles (stubs, mainly), templates etc. I'd appreciate it if you'd check my edits.
Tok Pisin is a fascinating language; my command of it is rudimentary unfortunately, but I'd like to expand the wiki and use the language correctly. I'm in the process of requesting a change of username here at en-wiki to Algazel for SUL purposes so please contact me at my user page at tpi or, preferably, at my home wiki. Cheers. New Challenge for Oceania and Australia
[edit]Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

ESEAP Conference 2018
[edit]Hello,
I’m Biyanto from Wikimedia Indonesia who organized ESEAP Conference. ESEAP Conference 2018 is a regional conference for Wikimedia communities throughout the ESEAP region: ESEAP stands for East, Southeast Asia, and Pacific. Taking place in Bali, Indonesia on 5–6 May 2018, this is the first regional conference for these Wikimedia communities.
East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific are the most under-represented regions within the Wikimedia community. There is a significant number of Wikimedia contributors in our regions, yet we continue to struggle in establishing a well-managed community. This conference will bring participants from various ESEAP communities together in order to better understand the issues and to look for solutions. It also aims to connect people of the Wikimedia movement within ESEAP regions, to share ideas, and to build regional collaborations that are impossible to achieve through online communication.
We’ve got a lot of participation from several countries, but we’re lacking from your country. As we need more participants from your country, we believe that your contribution and participation would be a valuable asset to the success of this event. If you would like to participate in the conference, please do fill the form as soon as possible (by April 5, 2018) and we’ll inform you if you get selected for the conference.
Thank you and we hope to see you soon. --Beeyan (talk) 17:01, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

[edit]I know nothing about the history of New Guinea. But from the article I didnt really get the feeling that he was really aiming for independence, that he did a lot of campaigning, or that there were articles about other people involved. Pepetua Serero, the only other person mentioned is just categorised as Category:Papua New Guinean rebels. Shouldnt they be together? Should all those rebels be in Category:Papua New Guinean independence activists Do you know more? Rathfelder (talk) 08:34, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. It seems that Category:Papua New Guinean rebels is the de facto category covering this. Yes, Francis Ona was most definitely working for independence - he was the most famous of the Bougainvillean independence activists. There is some more background in Bougainville Civil War. Wantok (toktok) 09:38, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
- Are they better described as rebels or independence activists? "rebel" is a bit vague. Rathfelder (talk) 11:04, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hmm they're pretty similar terms, but I guess "independence activists" is more specific. Wantok (toktok) 23:55, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
